Subject: Should you be called "Christian?"
The rule of "first usage" in biblical interpretation means that you go to the first time that word is used to determine its meaning(s) in subsequent passages. I would like for us to check out a word whose usage is quite commonly abused, the word (or title) "Christian."
Acts 11:26 says that Timothy brought Paul to Antioch, and they joined themselves together with the believers in that city and taught many people. The disciples were called Christians for the first time in Antioch. We learn that the Greek word used for "Christian" does not mean "they acted like Christ," as many have heard taught, but instead, it means "they belonged to, or were ‘of’, the Christ." You probably are thinking, "okay Ben, so what's the difference?"
Well, many religions and philosophies in the world teach their followers to live "good, moral lives." Jesus the Christ did that. Many teach that they should feed the hungry, work to heal the sick, be kind to others, etc.,etc. Jesus did all those things. Does doing any of these things make one eligible to be called "Christian?"
The Word of God says that Christians are those who have been redeemed (bought back) by the blood of the Lamb of God. They were slaves to the sin nature we are all born with, held in bondage to its power, and on their way to Hell. Jesus saw them on the slave block, offered to buy them, and called them to believe on and follow Him. They responded and HE paid off their sin debt. They now belong to the Christ, who is Jesus their Lord (from the Greek "kurias" which means "master", the same as the German "kaiser" and the Latin “caesar”). HE has bought them completely.
Many can act like Christ in some, or even many situations. Note the word "hypocrite," which always has a negative connotation, is the transliteration of the Greek word for actor. They who merely act like Christ, as did the Greek players in a drama or comedy, are holding up a mask in front of their face, acting as if they are something they are not.
What about you, should you be called "Christian?" Do you believe on His finished work for salvation? Have you been bought by the blood of Jesus? Do you belong to Him? If not, turn to Him today and receive Him as your Lord and Savior. If you do belong to Him, focus on the fact that you do; His blood covers you; you are no longer a slave to sin and the world. Then remember, HE takes care of His own. Should you be called Christian?
