When the title of this message first registered in your mind, you probably thought it was derogatory for me to use the adjective, "absurd," as descriptive of God. We, more often, use words like: sublime, awesome, magnificent, majestic, etc. How could I use a word like "absurd" to depict our sublime, awesome, magnificent, majestic God? I assure you I am praising Him with this message title. I know we normally see this "absurd" as being a negative. Let me give you one dictionary definition:
"absurd- adjective: inconsistent with reason or logic or common sense."
Do you see it? Have you ever heard the word used like this? -"that man is so rich, it's absurd!" Someone saying such a thing does not mean the man they described is not rich, but instead, he is so rich it's beyond what their reason or logic or common sense can fathom. Reason, logic, and common sense are all humanistic ideas that mock the supernatural. These terms leave no room for things outside of what we think of as "natural." It's not "reasonable" to believe that One being created and upholds all things, simply by the power of His word. It's not "logical" to believe Someone could love us so much that He would allow His Precious Son to be sacrificed for our sins, especially when that Someone knows everything about us, even our deepest and darkest secrets. Common sense just won't accept concepts like, "All -powerful, All-knowing, All-seeing, All-sufficient, All-present, Always." Reason, logic, and common sense simply must make everything fit inside their "box." Anything, or anyone, that refuses to be limited to their boundaries is inconsistent with them.
Now, can you see why I titled this message, "our absurd God"? Our God and Savior absolutely will not be limited to what we can see, feel, hold, or think! HE is inconsistent with reason or logic or common sense! When you begin to grasp that, you will understand why I say, "HE is our absurd God!!!" Praise The Glorious Name of the One Who is All -powerful, All-knowing, All-seeing, All-sufficient, All-present, and, Always!
